Smartwatch Buying Guide for Romanian Consumers

Smartwatches and a smartphone laid out on a table

Smartwatch purchases in Romania have grown steadily since 2022, with the most popular models remaining Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch for those already in those ecosystems, and Garmin and Xiaomi devices for buyers who prioritise fitness tracking or battery endurance. This guide covers what to consider before buying, followed by notes from 30-day wear tests on four current models available through Romanian retailers.

One observation upfront: the best smartwatch for a given person depends heavily on which phone they use. Android users lose several Apple Watch features that require iOS. Apple Watch users on Android cannot pair the watch at all. The platform choice effectively makes this a two-track decision tree for most Romanian buyers.

Key factors before choosing

Phone compatibility

Apple Watch requires an iPhone running iOS 16 or later. Samsung Galaxy Watch works best with Samsung Galaxy phones but supports other Android devices through the Galaxy Wearable app. Garmin and Xiaomi/Amazfit devices work with any Android or iOS phone without feature loss — making them practical for mixed-household situations or for those planning to switch phone brands.

Battery life expectations

Battery life figures from manufacturers are almost always optimistic. A Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 rated at 40 hours in standard mode returned 28–34 hours in 30-day testing with always-on display off, continuous heart rate monitoring on, and 45–60 notifications per day. An Apple Watch Series 9 rated at 18 hours returned 16–18 hours under the same conditions — meeting its spec more consistently, but with significantly less headroom.

Garmin Venu 3, by contrast, returned 11 days from a full charge under similar use — the largest practical gap between any two watches in this test. For buyers who want to charge less often than every night, Garmin's devices represent a fundamentally different battery experience.

Health sensor accuracy

Heart rate sensors in all four tested watches were cross-referenced against a Polar H10 chest strap during 20-minute cardio sessions. Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and Apple Watch Series 9 tracked within ±3 bpm during steady-state cardio. Both showed higher deviation (±7–10 bpm) during interval training with rapidly changing heart rates. Garmin Venu 3 maintained ±4 bpm accuracy even during interval sessions, likely due to its optical sensor placement design.

Sleep tracking in all four watches successfully identified sleep and wake times within 10 minutes of actual times noted in a journal. Deep versus light sleep stage distribution varied between devices and did not match consistently with one another, which is a known limitation of wrist-based optical sleep tracking generally — not specific to these models.

Models tested

Model Compatible with Battery (tested) GPS Price (RON, March 2025)
Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 (40mm) Android 28–34 h Yes 1,099
Apple Watch Series 9 (41mm) iPhone only 16–18 h Yes 1,699
Garmin Venu 3 (45mm) Android & iOS 10–11 days Yes 1,849
Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro Android & iOS 13–14 days Yes 399

Notification handling

All four devices delivered notifications from WhatsApp, Gmail, and calendar apps reliably during the test period. Responding to messages from the watch differs: Apple Watch supports full replies via voice dictation and scribble input; Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 offers pre-set replies and emoji in addition to voice input; Garmin Venu 3 shows notifications but supports only pre-set reply options; the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro displays notification content but does not support replies from the device.

For Romanian users, WhatsApp is the most relevant messaging app, and all four watches displayed messages in full. Diacritics (ă, â, î, ș, ț) rendered correctly on Samsung and Apple — Garmin rendered them as replacement characters in some font sizes, which is a display issue that has been reported on Garmin's community forums since early 2024.

GPS accuracy in Romanian terrain

GPS track logging was tested on three types of terrain: urban grid (Bucharest), mixed terrain (Sinaia foothills), and dense forest (Bucegi plateau approaches). Apple Watch Series 9 and Garmin Venu 3 both logged tracks within 8 meters of a reference Garmin GPSMAP device. Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 showed occasional track jumps of 15–25 meters in the forested section — consistent with reports on Samsung community forums about multipath interference under heavy canopy.

For hiking use specifically in the Carpathians, the Garmin Venu 3's longer battery life and tighter GPS accuracy make it the more practical option despite the higher price. The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro's GPS, while present, showed greater deviation across all three terrain types and is better suited for short outdoor cardio runs than multi-hour mountain routes.

Romanian retailer availability

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and Apple Watch Series 9 are broadly available at eMAG, Altex, Flanco, and MediaMarkt Romania. The Garmin Venu 3 is available at eMAG and selected Altex stores; physical Garmin dealers in Romania include specialist running and cycling shops in major cities. The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro is widely available across all major Romanian online and physical retailers.

Summary

iPhone users in Romania who want a watch that integrates tightly with their phone: Apple Watch Series 9, despite the daily charging requirement. Android users who want best-in-class fitness tracking and GPS without worrying about battery: Garmin Venu 3. Android users who want a competent smartwatch at a moderate price with reliable notification handling: Samsung Galaxy Watch 6. Budget buyers who primarily want health tracking, step counting, and long battery life: Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro at 399 RON remains the most cost-effective entry point in the segment.
